Frequently asked questions

How many lessons do I need to go to?

The Alexander technique is about changing habits and reactions that you’ve built up over a lifetime. You can sometimes have a big change or changes quickly, but most changes are gradual rather than overnight. These happen as you work with changing your habits and reactions.

Most people can learn the basics of the Alexander technique in 10 lessons, while 20–30 lessons provides a more thorough foundation in the technique and the way you can apply its tools across your life.

If you have very deeply ingrained habits and reactions, sensory processing issues, or a sensitive or traumatised nervous system, you may need more lessons to help you put what you have learnt into practice.

There is no minimum number of lessons you are required to attend.

How often do I need to come?

Most people start with weekly lessons or more often where possible and then reduce the frequency.

Initially, the more regularly you can come for lessons the better as we work to change how you use yourself and your sensory appreciation (your sense of how you are in your body). New pupils tend to lose this quite quickly without the reminder of another hands-on lesson.

If you have severe pain or muscle tension (and possible related anxiety), you should probably try to come several times a week initially and then reduce down.

What should I wear?

No special clothing is required but please wear comfortable clothing that you can move and breathe in. Part of the lesson takes place on a therapy table, so you may want to consider wearing trousers rather than a skirt or dress.

Those who are very sensitive to touch may also want to wear a long-sleeved T-shirt and long track pants to reduce uncomfortable sensations against their skin. Wearing thick socks can be helpful for sensitive feet.

Is there parking available?

There is free on-street parking on Aratonga Avenue. Please park on the street.
